Deep tissue massage is a popular choice because it is one of the most effective massages at relieving built up tension in the muscles.

If you have a desk job which leaves you feeling stiff at the end of the week, a deep tissue massage will help relieve tight muscles in the upper back, neck and shoulders.

Deep tissue massage is also good for improving flexibility and increasing blood and lymph circulation, which makes it ideal for active people.

During a deep tissue massage, you may feel some discomfort when tight muscle fibres are being massaged. Some of my clients like the "good pain" they feel during a deep tissue massage because they know the end result will be the release of tension in the muscles. The aim of deep tissue massage is not to cause pain but to release tension, so it is important for me to receive feedback from my clients. Every client is different and while one may enjoy a very deep massage, another may prefer a medium or lighter massage.

If deep massage is not right for you, you might like to try Myofascial Release , which is a gentle remedial technique that aims to release muscle tension in the fascia (a connective tissue that covers the muscles).

What to expect afterwards

You may experience tenderness after deep tissue massage in areas where there was a lot of tenion. This may last a day or two.  You should feel a great improvement after this. The more regularly you have a massage, the less painful it should be afterwards because you are preventing the build up of tension.

How often to have a deep tissue massage

Once a month is ideal for people working at a desk all day.  A massage every 6 to 8 weeks will help keep your body healthy and flexible and reduce the amount of tension in your muscles.
